Oh that looks like such a yummy recipe! Congrats on your 3rd place win for the Ruby; that is exciting!! I am already intrigued by the sound of the second Whale Bay and can't wait to see the new cover for Philly.

What an update!! Big congratulations on the win. Oh gosh that is good to have in the 'bag' so to speak. This post....mmmm...tell, how DID you ever fit that "day job" in...retirement suits you well. Love how you are plotting, planning and then maybe even changing your story. What a blast that is...you are in control of the story. Go Jo! Denyse x

Congrats on the Ruby, and having the book covers illustrated must be such a thrill. Great blog as well, that’s a lot of burgers to try! I’m constantly torn between writing a blog post or a Substack post. How do you decide between the two if you don’t mind me asking?

I absolutely don't mind you asking. Essentially, if the post is all about travel, I'll include it in a blog post. The intention of this is a weekly writing update with a weekly recipe. Going forward I'm trying to work out how I write my cookbook on substack as a separate series name, I guess ...or do I have two substacks? My brain hurts.

Congratulations on Christmas at Manus Ridge doing so well at this year's Ruby Awards. I love that book! And how cool is that tea towel -- your friend knows you very well. And that Apple Curd Crumble Slice looks divine!! Folks at your Op Shop are very lucky to get such a great treat! I greatly look forward to your upcoming books.

3rd place is still pretty darn awesome Jo - so a big congrats from me too. That apple curd thingie at the end looks delicious, but I would have thrown in the (tea)towel after the first couple of steps - I'll just have to imagine it (less calories that way too). I forget how much (other than you banging away awesomely on your laptop) goes into writing and producing a novel - seeing your support crew accepting your award for you was just lovley.

Thanks Leanne... I'd let someone else make the apple curd thingie for you. The extra step is quite the palaver but apparently it tastes good.

Firstly congrats with the Ruby. Well done! For the rest, golly, I relate. The tea towel over the shoulder (I usually wear an apron as well) VERY important in baking and should be listed in any recipe. It's moral support after all.

And the whole cover design thing. I had a fab designer here in Australia but she chose to follow another path (fair enough too) after designing 7 covers in two genres for me. Luckily I was directed to a brilliant UK designer who managed to follow implicitly with the final in a series, gave me idiosyncratic covers for two little fun one-offs and is on point with the first in a new series over two genres. She's wonderful!

Good luck with your latest, Joanne and thanks for an enjoyable newsletter!

I'm so glad my designer began designing again. She nails my covers every time.

Thanks Jodi. I was in Wellington so stayed awake until after midnight until Jo's text came through with the result.
